Neal Shusterman – Scythe (1e recensie)

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Over het verhaal

The scythe arrived late on a cold November afternoon. Citra was at the dining room table, slaving over a particular difficult algebra problem, shuffling variables, unable to solve for X or Y, when this new and far more pernicious variable entered her life’s equation.
Guests were frequent at the Terranovas’ apartment, so when the doorbell rang, there was no sense of forebodin – no dimming of the sun, no foreshadowing of the arrival of death at their door. Perhaps the universe should have deigned to provide such warnings, but scythes were no more supernatural than tax collectors in the grand scheme of things. They showed up, did their unpleasant business, and were gone.
Her mother answered the door. Citra didn’t see the visitor, as he was, at first, hidden from her view by the door when it opened. What she saw was how her mother stood there, suddenly immobile, as if her veins had solidified within her. As if, were she tipped over, she would fall to the floor and shatter. (blz. 5)

De scythe (of Zeis) komt niet bij Citra thuis om een van hen te doden. Hij moet de buren zijn, is te vroeg en wil graag wat te eten. Tenminste dat is wat hij als reden geeft. Later blijkt dat hij Citra als een van zijn leerlingen wil hebben. Een paar dagen later gaat hij op bezoek bij Rowan, die hij ook als leerling wil hebben. De wereld wordt tegenwoordig geregeld door Thunderhead, een kunstmatig intelligent wezen. Thunderhead zorgt ervoor dat mensen genoeg te eten hebben, dat er voor iedereen werk is en dat mensen een tevreden leven leiden. De scythes zorgen er voor dat het bevolkingsaantal niet te groot wordt.

The following morning, Rowan came face to face with a scythe. It wasn’t unheard of to see a scythe in his neighborhood. You couldn’t help but run into one once in a while – but they didn’t often show up in a high school.
The encounter was Rowan’s fault. Punctuality was not his strong point – especiall now that he was expected to escort his younger siblings and half-siblings to their school before hopping into a publicar end hurrying to his. He had just arrived and was heading to the attendance window when the scythe came around a corner, his spotless ivory robe flaring behind him.
Once, when hiking with his family, Rowan had gone off on his own and had encountered a mountain lion. The tight feeling in his chest now, as well as the weak feeling in his loins, had been exactly the same. Fight of flight, his biology said. But Rowan had done neither. Back then, he had fought those instincts and calmly raised his arms, as he had read to do, making himself look larger. It had worked, and the animal bounded away, saving him a trip to the local revival center.
Now, at the sudden prospect of a scythe before him, Rowan had an odd urge to do the same – as if raising his hands above his head could frighten the scythe away. The thought made him involuntarily laugh out loud. The last thing you want to do is laugh at a scythe. (blz. 19)

De scythe komt niet voor Rowan, maar voor een andere leerling, Kohl. Kohl is erg populair op school omdat hij een goede sporter is. Als hij bij de scythe komt raakt hij in paniek. Rowan lijkt het verschrikkelijk om dood te gaan zonder dat er een vriendelijk iemand bij aanwezig is en, voordat hij zichzelf kan tegenhouden, vraagt aan de scythe of hij erbij mag zijn om Kohl te steunen. Later denken zijn medeleerlingen dat hij de schuldige is van de dood van Kohl, dat hij de scythe heeft geholpen. Ze geloven hem niet als hij vertelt wat er echt is gebeurd…

Citra en Rowan geloven het niet als ze gevraagd worden om leerling te worden van scythe Faraday. Het vooruitzicht om de rest van hun leven mensen te doden om de bevolking op peil te houden is niet aantrekkelijk. Toch zeggen ze allebei ‘ja’ tegen zijn voorstel.

Citra could not believe she was actually going through with this. What secret, self-destructive part of herself had asserted its will over her? What had possessed her to accept the apprenticeship? Now there was no backing out. Yesterday – on the third day of the new year, – Scythe Faraday had come to her apartment and had given a year’s immunity to her father and brother. He added several months to her mother’s so their immunity would all expire at the same time. Of course, if Citra was chosen to be a full scythe, their immunity would become permanent.
Her parents were tearful when she left. Citra wondered whether they were tears of sorrow, joy, or relief. Perhaps a combination of all three.
“We know you’ll do great things in this world,” her father had said. And she wondered what about bringing death could be considered great. (blz. 48)

Ze nemen allebei afscheid van hun familie en hun leven en gaan met scythe Faraday mee. Hij zorgt ervoor dat ze van alles leren over wapens, vergif en andere manieren om mensen te doden. Daarnaast leren ze ook over kunst, emoties en andere dingen die men in de huidige samenleving niet meer heeft. Op een congres van scythes leren ze andere scythes en leerling-scythes kennen. Scythe Faraday is de enige die twee leerlingen heeft. De leiders van de scythes vinden dit geen goed plan en er wordt besloten dat aan het einde van hun leerlingjaar één van heb gekozen zal worden als scythe en dat deze persoon de andere leerling moet doden.

Een paar weken na het congres wordt scythe Faraday dood gevonden bij een treinstation. Het lijkt erop dat hij zelfmoord heeft gepleegd. Citra en Rowan gaan allebei naar een andere scythe om hun opleiding af te maken. Hoe zal hun opleiding verder verlopen? Wie van hen zal aan het einde van het jaar de beste leerling-scythe zijn?
