Over het verhaal

The door slid open, and Clarke knew it was time to die.
Her eyes locked on the guard’s boots, and she braced for the rush of fear, the flood of desperate panic. But as she rose up onto her elbow, peeling her shirt from the sweat-soaked cot, all she felt was relief.
She’d been transferred to a single after attacking a guard, but for Clare, there was no such thing as solitary. They called to her from the corners of her dark cell. They filled the silence between her heartbeats. They screamed from the deepest recesses of her mind. It wasn’t death she craved, but if that was the only way to silence the voices, then she was prepared to die.
She’d been Confined for treason, but the truth was far worse than anyone could’ve imagined. Even if by some miracle she was pardoned at her retrial, there’d be no real reprieve. Her memories were more oppressive than any cell walls. (61 van 3475)

Clarke is bijna 18 jaar. Ze zit in de gevangenis en krijgt bezoek van een arts. Ze denkt dat hij komt om haar te executeren, maar dat blijkt niet zo te zijn. Ze krijgt te horen dat ze één van de 100 jongeren uit de gevangenis is die naar Aarde worden gestuurd. Het is inmiddels 300 jaar geleden dat er een nucleaire oorlog was op Aarde en de regering zegt dat de Aarde nu weer bewoonbaar zal zijn. Deze 100 jongeren zullen de eerste bewoners zijn. De overlevenden van de nucleaire ramp hebben inmiddels honderden jaren in een megaruimteschip gewoond. Deze 100 jongeren zijn de eersten die weer voet op Aarde zetten en dat is wennen. Het is hier heel anders dan op het ruimteschip.

For a moment, she was aware of only colors, not shapes. Stripes of blue, green, and brown so vibrant her brain couldn’t process them. A gust of wind passed over her, making her skin tingle and flooding her nose with scents Clarke couldn’t begin to identify. At first, all she could see were the trees. There were hundreds of them, as if every tree on the planet had come to welcome them back to Earth. Their enormous branches were lifted in celebration toward the sky, which was a joyful blue. The ground stretched out in all directions – ten times farther than the longest deck on the ship. The amount of space was almost inconceivable, and Clarke suddenly felt lightheaded, as if she were about to float away.
She became vaguely aware of voices behind her and turned to see a few of the others emerge from the dropship. “It’s beautiful,” a dark-skinned girl whispered as she reached down to run her trembling hand along the shiny green blades of grass.
A short, stocky boy took a few shaky steps forward. The gravitational pull on the Colony was meant to mimic Earth’s, but faced with the real thing it was clear they hadn’t gotten it quite ruight. “Everything’s fine,” the boy said, his voice a mixture of relief and confusion. “We could’ve come back ages ago.”
“You don’t know that,” the girl replied. “Just because we can breath now, doesn’t mean the air isn’t toxic.” She twisted around to face him and held her wrist up, gesturing with her bracelet. “The Council didn’t give us these as jewelry. They want to see what happens to us.” (538)

Het is een spannend toekomstverhaal. Op aarde is er een nucleaire oorlog geweest waardoor mensen niet meer op aarde konden leven. Een groep mensen is vertrokken, de ruimte in. Ze leven al honderden jaren op een ruimteschip.
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit de gezichtspunten van vier jongeren, Clarke, Wells, Bellamy en Glass. Glass is de enige van hen die niet op Aarde is. Ze is vlak voor vertrek ontsnapt en verbergt zich op het ruimteschip
